Discover the Important Nerve You’ve Never Heard of: The Vagus Nerve and its Effect on Mental Health

Hello, I'm Heather Steele, the founder of Morrisville Counseling and Consulting. Today, I want to share some crucial insights about a part of our body that plays a pivotal role in our mental health—the vagus nerve. Understanding this nerve and how to enhance its function can be a game-changer for those suffering from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and many other mental health challenges.

What is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is one of the longest nerves in your body and a vital part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls several body functions that happen without conscious effort, such as heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. It extends from the brainstem down into the stomach and intestines, innervating the heart and other organs along the way.

The autonomic nervous system is divided into two main parts: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems. While the sympathetic is responsible for the 'fight or flight' response during perceived danger, the parasympathetic, primarily mediated by the vagus nerve, helps with 'rest and digest' functions. It's crucial for calming the body down after stress and enabling social bonds and healthy social interactions.

How Does the Vagus Nerve Help with Stress?

The vagus nerve plays a critical role in regulating stress by activating the parasympathetic response—often referred to as the "rest and digest" system. This system is the calming counterbalance to the sympathetic "fight or flight" response that activates during times of stress and anxiety.

It helps lower the heart rate, decrease blood pressure, and slow breathing rates, promoting a state of calm throughout the body. By stimulating the vagus nerve, the body can more effectively transition into a relaxed state, where digestion improves, muscle tension decreases, and overall bodily functions return to baseline levels that promote health and well-being.

How to Strengthen Your Vagus Nerve for Better Mental Health

At Morrisville Counseling and Consulting, we focus on techniques that enhance the 'vagal tone'—the activity of the vagus nerve. High vagal tone is associated with better physical and emotional well-being. Here’s how we can help increase it:

  • Breathing Exercises: Techniques such as deep, slow breathing can stimulate the vagus nerve and promote relaxation.

  • Social Engagement: Face-to-face interaction, eye contact, and listening in a responsive way are powerful activators of the vagus nerve.

  • Cold Exposure: Brief exposures to cold, such as a splash of cold water on the face, can stimulate the nerve.

  • Physical Exercise: Regular physical activity increases vagal tone, improving stress resilience and mood.

  • Meditation and Yoga: Practices that promote relaxation and mindfulness support vagal health by reducing stress and enhancing self-regulation.

  • Journaling: We encourage all of our patients to journal often about what they are thankful for or the good things they have. This practice not only promotes gratitude but has been shown to lower heart rate, increase heart rate variability, and strengthen the immune system.

How Phones and Less Social Time Affect Your Vagus Nerve

In our increasingly digital world, face-to-face interaction is less frequent, which can negatively impact our vagal tone. Without regular, meaningful personal interactions that involve laughter, touch, and deep conversation, our vagal tone can diminish. Lower vagal tone is often found in individuals feeling disconnected, anxious, or depressed.

At Morrisville Counseling and Consulting, we understand that improving vagal tone is a vital part of therapy, especially for those dealing with severe stress or trauma. Our trained therapists use a variety of interventions tailored to each individual's needs, helping them move out of the harmful 'fight, flight, or freeze' responses and into a more balanced state where healing can occur.
